art /craft / design /

ceramic artists are
exploring the
theoretical and

‘Building a wood fire
kiln in Peru’
Essentially it describes
the journey to Oxapampa
in the Peruvian
rainforest and the
subsequent building of a
wood fired kiln to
create a living for the
indigenous Amuesha
people. My brief from
Oxfam and Survival
International ( jointly
funded) was twofold, to
build a wood-fired kiln
and to create glazes
from local materials.

The Ceramics and Glaze
CD-ROM project is an
investigation into the
potential of new
technologies to enhance
and deliver secondary,
undergraduate and
postgraduate courses in
ceramics, especially
when student numbers are
outstripping the
resources available to
cater for their needs.
This project is
also a potentially
powerful tool for the
professional,
encouraging and
supporting development
of new avenues of
expression away from
centres of education and
specific Library
facilities.
Gus
Mabelson
Artist /Craftsman +
Course Director of the
Crafts Council of
Ireland’s Ceramic Design
and Skills Course.
After travelling through
China last year with
eight other Irish makers
Gus will give a talk
about the study
opportunities for
ceramic artists in
China. This will include
an overview of the
Sanbao Ceramic Art
Institute just outside
Jingdezhen; China’s
famous porcelain city,
as well as the newly
established Ceramic
Sculpture Factory run by
Takeshi Yasuda in the
city itself. The third
centre creating links
with foreign ceramic
artists is the amazing
collection of
International Museums
being constructed at
Fuping not far from
Xian, the site of the
Terra-cotta Army.
Jim
Turner - Hands on
Workshop
The workshop will be
hands on, making an
appropriate group
orientated project
(mural or similar, maybe
something connected to
our surroundings etc)
Most of the making to be
completed on the first
day. Then force dryed
and bisque-fired over
night. On the 2nd and
3rd day, we will glaze
and Raku fire the
pieces, finally
assembling the finished
“artwork” on the final
day.
Wood

A wood firing will take
place over the course of
