‘The history of Irish ceramics’ - starting with the Fonthill Vase (c. 1300AD, Chinese) in the National Museum Ireland collection, which is world famous. Moving on to Irish delftware of the 18th century, Belleek, Frederick Vodrey (1872-1897), Della Robbia (for the Cork International Exhibition of 1902), Kathleen Cox, Carrigaline, John ffrench, Arklow Pottery, etc. -

  Kira Campbell

“As the barriers between art /craft / design / industry dissolve, ceramic artists are exploring the theoretical and aesthetic implications of making mixed media work,”

  Mike Dodd

Potter

‘Building a wood fire kiln in Peru’

Essentially it describes the journey to Oxapampa in the Peruvian rainforest and the subsequent building of a wood fired kiln to create a living for the indigenous Amuesha people. My brief from Oxfam and Survival International ( jointly funded) was twofold, to build a wood-fired kiln and to create glazes from local materials.

 Clive Fiddis

The Ceramics and Glaze CD-ROM project is an investigation into the potential of new technologies to enhance and deliver secondary, undergraduate and postgraduate courses in ceramics, especially when student numbers are outstripping the resources available to cater for their needs.

This project is also a potentially powerful tool for the professional, encouraging and supporting development of new avenues of expression away from centres of education and specific Library facilities.

 Gus Mabelson

Artist /Craftsman + Course Director of the Crafts Council of Ireland’s Ceramic Design and Skills Course.

After travelling through China last year with eight other Irish makers Gus will give a talk about the study opportunities for ceramic artists in China. This will include an overview of the Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute just outside Jingdezhen; China’s famous porcelain city, as well as the newly established Ceramic Sculpture Factory run by Takeshi Yasuda in the city itself. The third centre creating links with foreign ceramic artists is the amazing collection of International Museums being constructed at Fuping not far from Xian, the site of the Terra-cotta Army.

Jim Turner - Hands on Workshop

The workshop will be hands on, making an appropriate group orientated project (mural or similar, maybe something connected to our surroundings etc) Most of the making to be completed on the first day. Then force dryed and bisque-fired over night. On the 2nd and 3rd day, we will glaze and Raku fire the pieces, finally assembling the finished “artwork” on the final day.

 Wood firing

A wood firing will take place over the course of the weekend participants are invited to bring along 2 medium sized pieces to fire

        Events & Exhibitions

Limerick Ceramic Works are delighted to announce the opening of an exhibition of new ceramic works by members, at 8pm on Thursday the 14th of August in Limerick Printmakers Gallery.

Established in 2007, Limerick Ceramic Works have aimed to raise awareness of ceramics as a unique and innovative art form as well as a high design medium. The presence of this studio and gallery in Limerick city provides both emerging and established ceramic and non-ceramic artists with the opportunity to make and exhibit their artwork. Their gallery and workshop is situated on Franciscan Lane in the heart of the city and it is from this central location that the ceramicists have strived to raise the awareness of ceramics through workshops, exhibitions and classes that engage the public and various groups within the community.  Limerick Ceramic Works also facilitates training classes to allow ceramicists and non-ceramic artists to advance their artistic careers by expanding their knowledge of all ceramic processes in addition to facilitating the development of the Visual Arts within the Limerick area.

Limerick Ceramic Works have recently celebrated their 1st birthday and to mark this special occasion the members have created new works for this unique exhibition. The show has been selected and will be opened by Dr. Marilyn Lennon and Ceramicist Eileen Coates. Marilyn Lennon lectures ‘New Media’ in Limerick School of Art and Design and has also trained and lectured ceramics in NCAD. Eileen Coates is a well-established ceramic artist who has exhibited throughout the country.

The exhibition will run from 14th to the 28th of August and the gallery is open 11am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 4pm Saturday. For further information on the exhibition or Limerick Ceramic Works contact us at limerickceramicworks@gmail.com or on 061 408714
